Valkyrie.
SPEAKER_00:Valkyrie. This is Raina. And Vanessa. And this is Valkyrie's Say Less. And by that you know we really mean we're gonna say so much more. It is our last episode of season one of Valkyrie's Say Less, and so it's a little argumental. Right. Who are we?
SPEAKER_03:If you don't know It's our last episode, but if you don't know because you're just tuning in.
SPEAKER_00:Yes, SF moms. And former basketball hoopers, artists, current entrepreneurs. Trying to. Yeah. Trying. Trying so hard. And we are happy to be living in San Francisco in this glorious weather that we're having. Mourning that the Valkyrie's season is over, but staying with it with the new setup for the playoffs. It's the best of seven. How do you feel about seven games?
SPEAKER_03:I love it. I love it so much. I thought it was like so crazy to start with best of three. Yeah, that was too short. It's felt like nothing.
SPEAKER_00:Five feels good. Seven, I'm like, these poor players have been playing so often for so long with only 12 people on the roster. Like, are they gonna be okay? I don't want any more injuries. I want everyone to make it to the end, play their hardest.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, no, we gotta get this up next year to start with also a series that starts with five.
SPEAKER_00:Three is too little. Right, right, yes, yes. And we need better rosters. Bigger rosters. 15 at least. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, so the Valkyries were out in round one versus the Lynx. So our hearts got, you know, a little bit torn.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, strong feelings. Strong feelings. Three games. I was like, no.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, round two. I was really rooting for the Lynx. I know. And shock of all shocks, they did not make it to round three. I know. It was the craziest round two.
SPEAKER_00:It was so high drama. Yeah, high drama. It was so fun to watch. Where did you watch? Uh, mostly on YouTube TV.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, same. Also same.
SPEAKER_00:In my morning nesting.
SPEAKER_03:No, no, totally. I didn't go, I didn't go like out anywhere. Yeah. But it was like wild. We did watch them on delay sometimes. Uh, and we watched them with the upstairs, with the upstairs folks. But the last game for the Lynx, I mean, or not the last game, the second to last game, when Nafisa Collier got taken out by Alyssa Thomas and what looked to be very clean. And then Cheryl Reeve lost her mind. Um but, you know, maybe rightly so.
SPEAKER_00:And then they had to play their final game without a coach and without Nafisa Collier.
SPEAKER_03:Then they're runner up to MVP.
SPEAKER_00:I know. Oh, it was really I really wanted them to win that one. I did, and I um And they all did. I've been following all the uh all the conflict that's come out of that. And yeah, it's it's an inter We have what three weeks before the collective bargaining agreement has to be settled. And so tense times. I'm interested in hearing more from other parties involved. I feel like I stand with Fee. Fees is taking the brunt of it, um, as well as Kathy is taking the brunt of all the criticism. I mean, she's let her head roll. That's rated G.
SPEAKER_03:It's rated G. It's an expression.
SPEAKER_00:Um but yeah, what are the owners saying? Like, what are they doing behind the scenes?
SPEAKER_03:Pay the players.
SPEAKER_00:Pay the players, yes.
SPEAKER_03:At the end of the day, I feel like, you know, we're always like, no presses, bad press, bad press, whatever. And it's true, it's on all the headlines. Yeah. On like, you know, the New York Times, ESPN, Chronicle, like it's everywhere.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:And so that's great because everybody is much more aware of what's going on. And at the end of the day, we need more people, more pressure so that the players get what they need, which is according to the New York Times editorial of last week, um, there's a professor at a university who did this whole like spreadsheet of saying if the women were to get, you know, an equal revenue share as the men, then they would we would be talking about three million dollars for salaries. And what I believe is being asked in the CBA is actually it's more like a million. And so we're still not even asking what maybe we should be asking for. And yet a million is a far cry from 200,000, which is, you know, what the salary is now. That's max. Yeah. It's not the starting salary. Okay. We go back to 67,000 in the Bay. I don't know what the starting is in other cities. I'm assuming it's way lower because it's probably based on cost of living.
SPEAKER_00:Every team has their their own cap.
SPEAKER_03:But do but does every team start at 67, or do they modify that based on the No, that's what the CBA is about.
SPEAKER_00:It's a whole yeah, yeah. I would argue that maybe there should be a cost of living if you're living here and not living in the Trevor Burrus.
SPEAKER_03:Because we always talk about how that's like not even what an SF like public school teacher like starts at, and that's like based on cost of living. Ah my God. But anyways, very exciting. So round two, the Lynx got knocked off, which you know, we love the Lynx with the stud buds. And that was crazy. Wasn't expecting Mercury to beat them, but they did.
SPEAKER_00:And they were strong. Yeah, who are you? Uh I feel like we have some connections, so many connections to the aces with Tiff Hayes played there. And Natalie Nakase. Natalina Kase, Kate Martin. Yeah. Yeah, so there's a whole bunch of like a little heraldage of aces in there. So I'm rooting for the aces. Okay, I know. And I also just love Asia Wilson.
SPEAKER_03:I think I am too. I love Asia Wilson. Um, but the thing is that I think that's really cool, and for po people who are just tuning into this to think is that like uh the aces are trying to create a dynasty. They have won two of the last of championships in the last four years. And so if they win this year, that'll be three championships in four years, with only New York getting the other one. And what's awesome to think of is that in 2022, when they were playing against the Suns and they beat the Suns, Alyssa Thomas was on the Suns. The Sun, so singular. The Sun. And so the Connecticut Sun. And so they I love to add S's, you know that. I'm always like talking about that restaurant. Zoom. Oh god, it is. It is. Oh, it is. My mom calls it Traitor's Joe, Wall, Wall Green. She adds and drops S's like no one's business. But okay, so Alyssa Thomas was on The Sun and lost, and so she is trying to go for her first championship ring. And I'm like, ooh, love a good underdog story too.
SPEAKER_00:Underdog, she's a dog, yeah.
SPEAKER_03:She's a dog.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, we will see. I kind of have to like take a step back and kind of de-escalate or kind of like I had to take a little bit of a step back to just exhale from the stress of like loving the Valkyrie so much and feeling like that sense of loss and maintaining that much energy was exhausting. I have no idea how they're playing basketball again right now. Like, how did you do it? Like, I'm in my off season off season. But one thing I want to say is that um we connected with this 30secondtimeout.com April, I think her name is. Yeah. And they're great. I signed up for their little newsletter, and that's just been enough to like a little dose in the morning. They have like three little points every day. What's going on in the basketball world? And so just wanted to give them a shout-out. They gave us a shout-out, so they're like part of our little ecosystem. Oh my god, love them. W B B love.
SPEAKER_03:I agree. I usually it's like I wake up, I have alarm, I wake up, and then I meditate. But before meditating, I sometimes, and I shouldn't do this, but I sometimes look at my email just to see is there anything that's like urgent. You know, it's 6 20 in the morning. But usually I'll look at their headlines and then know that I'll get back to it over coffee.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, it's just nice and consumable. Yeah, they gave us a shout-out, so we're giving them a shout-out. You can just go to 30secondtimeout.com and you can subscribe. It's totally free and informative. Okay, with that.
SPEAKER_03:So wait, we have a lot that we're gonna be talking about today. Like where are the Valks players going in the offseason? How do you watch them? What's everyone's status like next year? What does that matter regarding the CBA? Um, we have player updates, we have loads of fun little details, as well as maybe some more recaps of the season. But before we do that, who are we talking about today?
SPEAKER_00:Caitlin Chen. Woo! What a great one. You learned after 15 episodes not to blow up the mic when you scream. Woo! It only took 15 episodes. Nice. So we're gonna talk about Caitlin Chen, our final player profile. Love her. I'm a little bittersweet. I'm a little um sad about this. It's been a long road, and she is quite the person to focus on. She's so beloved that she's she's sold the 10th most jerseys. Number two, Caitlin Chen in the WMBA store. Isn't that crazy? Yes, and and that's not even counting like bootleg. That is so crazy. I know. Real jerseys, I hope. She's getting all that money for her name and like likeness and number. So congratulations. I am just really mesmerized by her popularity in the Bay Area. She's not actually from the Bay, but she feels like she is, right?
SPEAKER_03:Oh yeah, no, she's from Pasadena. She's from San Marino. She's from SoCal.
unknown:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Where Coach Nakase is from. And act actually watching her little bio that Sephora did on her, it reminds me a lot of uh the bio video that we watched on Coach Nakase of like playing in that Southern California light, playing basketball, playing with the boys. Yeah, so she grew up in Southern California and now she's ours. She's I feel like she's like she's always been here. She's always been here. Um bay. Yeah, very bae and very what we needed to get through the the highs and the lows. Yeah. She is like super high, standing up when we're celebrating, and then she's still standing up when we're when we're losing. Perfect.
SPEAKER_03:She's so bahhalla.
SPEAKER_00:Totally bahala. She's a rookie in the truest sense of the word. We have a bunch of rookies, as you know, that have European experience. Totally.
SPEAKER_03:Who are like pros for for six years.
SPEAKER_00:Right. And then they came here and technically their rookie season in the W. Um, but she is she's young.
SPEAKER_03:She's straight out of college.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. How are we gonna get into her? Oh, okay. Uh do we need a teacher game?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah. We always need a teacher game.
SPEAKER_00:Okay. Uh let's see. Well, it's our last class. Okay. Well, I'm imagining I either end my semesters with like a game. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Like just a let's a c God, I wish we could play cahoot.
SPEAKER_00:Um like something that's fun that just shows the students like, look how much you've learned. Yes. And it's like part it's integrated into your sense of humor. Fine. And funness. Love course. Or we could go serious of like how a college course ends and like synthesize the information. I'm leaning more towards the first one.
SPEAKER_03:Okay. I just left a sound bath during professional development at work. So the idea of going back into serious mode, I'm like, nope, can't do that. Okay. All right.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. We've got to stay late.
SPEAKER_03:Gotta be Caitlin, gotta stay late.
SPEAKER_00:Right. Okay. On brand with On brand with Ms. Chen. Chen, yeah.
SPEAKER_03:So what about if I give you three words and then we'll stop the recording. You can have 45 seconds to think about it, and then you have to just dance it out. Dance it out. Exactly. So this is why it's so fun to be together. You say things like that.
SPEAKER_00:And that wasn't what I was gonna say, and that is what I wanted to do. Well the listeners can't see us. Because maybe next season we'll do some videos. I had somebody respond today, like, can't wait to see the next episode. I'm like, you can't see us yet.
SPEAKER_03:We're we got we'll do a big reveal of the bunk bed studios. All right, so And then you choose three words, give it to me, and then I dance it out. Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_00:But we're dancing with our words.
SPEAKER_03:Clearly.
SPEAKER_00:Do you want me to break in a song?
SPEAKER_03:We're in a bunk bed. You can do whatever you want, as long as you some interpretation to Caitlin.
unknown:Okay.
SPEAKER_03:Are you ready?
SPEAKER_00:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Okay. Here are your first three words. And then I'm going to time you and you only have a minute. The words are Ivy. Beauty, besties.
SPEAKER_00:Okay. Go. Go. You're gonna give me a minute. Okay. So I have one minute. Ivy. Thinking of Poison Ivy, Shapeshifter, she's gone through a lot of stuff. Also, Ivy League. She played for Princeton. Ivy League doesn't let you play fifth year as a graduate student. So she Princeton couldn't play. She had to enter into the whatever it's called. Transfer Transfer Portal. Portal, thank you. And so she transferred to Yukon. OMG. Casually becomes a husky under Genoa. Like Tiffany Hayes. And where are my other words? Beauty. Beauty. Oh my gosh, I'm gonna run out of time. Beauty. Okay, beauty. She has a quote. She said that beauty is knowing yourself and being confident. And having aura. And then besties, page backers. Woo! Boof. And tell us more. Tell us more about page backers. So she was another person that went to the draft thinking she was just there to be a supportive BFF and got drafted by the Valkyries. Mic drop now. Bam. Was that a minute? That was great. That was a minute. That was cerebral dancing. You are incredible. Okay. Okay. Okay, give it to me. Um let me get yours. Okay. All right. Your words are let's see. Camera, COVID, and moneyball. Camera, COVID, moneyball. All right. Not necessarily. Oh wait, I gotta time you. Hold on. Okay. You're getting extra time. This is totally not fair. Not necessarily. Last day of school vibes.
SPEAKER_03:In the order, but COVID, we're going with first because she sat out her freshman year at Princeton due to COVID and the season getting canceled. Which is why she was eligible to play another year. She played three years at Princeton, but she was, you know, freshman to senior year there, so three out of four years. And then because she hadn't played her freshman year, she was eligible for the transfer portal, which is then how she got to Yukon. All right, next one, Moneyball. This is amazing. But her boyfriend, Caden Shapiro, is Mark Shapiro's son. Caden does play for the minor league baseball, and they met at Princeton playing baseball, but his dad, Mark Shapiro, is now the owner of the Toronto Blue Jays and also was the featured or was what who Moneyball was about that movie. Right, right. So that is crazy.
SPEAKER_00:In that movie, they do say Shapiro, but I Shapiro.
SPEAKER_03:It is Shapiro. I heard it, I heard him say it. And then camera. I loved that she borrowed the camera from one of the cameramen during a Box game. Sorry. To film the bench. All right, next one. She borrowed a camera? She took the camera from one of the cameramen. No way. At see? You love this. And then she filmed the bench to show like the bench because she is so exactly. Okay, so three words for you.
SPEAKER_00:Wait, can we take a breathe, a breath here? Wait, do you ever watch Pardon the Interruption?
SPEAKER_03:Do you know Pardon the Interruption? No. The show? Oh, it's so funny because my husband's so into it. Jack, my my husband. Um, and basically the girls are like, oh, we grew up with those voices, but they do this. Okay where they have like 40 seconds and they have the topics and then they bang, bang, bang, go through it.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_03:So I think it's it's good. All right.
SPEAKER_00:All right, go.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, take a breath. All right. Three words. Okay. UV light vibes, middle school. Go.
SPEAKER_00:Okay. Um V light. She celebrates her anniversary on the beach with her boyfriend for the last two anniversaries. I think they're on their third year of dating, Shapiro. UV light. She also has endorsement with a beauty mask that uses UV light. Nailed it. Um vibes. Vibes is so general. Okay, she's good vibes. She has so many clips of her doing cool dances with LA on the sidelines. Um, she's really goofy when the the when vi when V was hatching, uh-huh. Our mascot was hatching. She said it was a dinosaur and like scooted away. Like she was 10 years old. It was so cute. Yeah, just great vibes. And then middle school, oh my gosh, I have 15 seconds. Middle school. She started playing AAU in middle school. Also, her her parents both migrated to the United States when they were in middle school and build a life. From where? For him, uh for her and her sister from Taiwan. Okay, you just made it. That's one minute. Woo! Take a breather. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Okay. God, I love this game. Yeah, I do too. I love a high-pressure situation. Post soundbath.
SPEAKER_00:That was a minute. All right, give me my words. Okay. Next one. Um, overseas country music and stats.
SPEAKER_03:Bingo. Overseas. We just learned that Caitlin is going overseas to play in the Czech League with another one of our players, Janelle. Awesome. Awesome. So she not only is going overseas, but she is also, we already knew this, was going to be part of Athletes Unlimited, which maybe you are going to have to jump in and usurp this and tell me the connection to country music. Country music.
SPEAKER_00:You're so on the right track. What is she going to play? Where is she going after she plays in the Czech Republic for Praha? No, but it said Athletes Unlimited. Yeah, but where is it? Where is it in Texas? It's not in Texas. Where is it? It's in Nashville.
SPEAKER_03:Oh my goodness. That's where I'm going to be. That's right. Okay, we'll have to expand on that more because that's pretty cool. And then stats. All right. Well, as a Valk, she averaged two points uh per game. And I believe she played in 18 games. And she, you know, a lot of people are like, give Kaelin more playing time. But I think for her first season, she did wonderful. Yeah. And it's not about the stats. The stats are one thing for her, but it's also about everything else that she brings, including some awesome quotes from Natalie Nakase, Tammy Fagbenle, just about how great she is to work with. Okay?
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. All right. So Oh, for the vibes, I want to go back. This is a quote from Coach Nakase. She's so loved from the basketball world. She just leaves everything out on the floor. She's someone you can trust, but at the same time, she's fearless. That's a really that's what you want to hear from your coach. I know. Also says that she has a really high IQ.
SPEAKER_03:Oh my god. Now that we've done four rounds, can we expand on some topics? Okay. So that So that was our creative game of showing, proving what you know, given certain words, and in a pressure and creative element.
SPEAKER_00:Unless you're getting school fun, yeah. Now we can go, now we can slow it down. Okay. I kind of forget what we already said.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, well, we said it quickly, so I think that we can go over some stuff. Okay. Okay, so she is 23 years old. She's a youngin'. I mean, she started playing, she was initially signed by the Valks in May, and she had just finished uh the championship.
SPEAKER_00:The month before her first year with Yukon.
SPEAKER_03:That is just So there was like championship with Yukon, draft Valks.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. And and just seems like a really good friend. Like she has so much on her Instagram with friends from Princeton and friends from that one year at Yukon. Um and she just she's really seemed to like purely, purely happy with her teammates on the Valks. Yeah, in college, she got a whole bunch of awards. We didn't go over that.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, like so many awards in college.
SPEAKER_00:So many awards. So she's not just vibe, she's got all these awards for like MVP of the Ivy League.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah. Um first team, all Ivy. Mm-hmm. And basically, her awards are spread out throughout all the years that she was there. Yeah. Like rookie of the week, Ivy League. Um, so loads of mentions. And also, what I want to say in terms of like how hard she works, it's clear that she was a really hard worker in terms of basketball, in terms of academics. She got into Princeton, she made a name for herself, she really worked hard. And then also it's that same kind of attitude. Like, she was waived from the Valks um a month after starting, and she basically took that opportunity to go back home and to focus on what she needed to do better at.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:And so she s knew that there was a really good chance that she might get called back given that so many players were going to Eurobasket. Right. And so instead of, you know, being bummed about it, she said that she focused on strength training and also thinking of what she learned in the preseason and areas of weakness and focused on that, like regarding her shot and whatnot.
SPEAKER_00:Right. Temi Fagbenle had a quote about her coming back um on July 31st. So she was waived, to be clear. She started, did preseason, then she was waived, and everyone was super upset because she has such an following. An auto auto-following. It was just like such her, such a great thing to see. And the first preseason game we went to, do you remember those four four people in front of us all had Caitlin Chen gear on with number two? Yeah. Because she was 20 in college, I think. With number two, and they were all like going crazy when she got into the game. And then she was waived and she came back. Anyway, so Temi Fagman Le's reaction to that, Temi said the transition for her was like she never left. She knows how to be a great team player and be within the system.
SPEAKER_03:Amazing. Yeah. Just the way that people talk about her. It's very uplifting.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. Did we mention she's the first Taiwanese American basketball? Say it again.
SPEAKER_03:We didn't say it like that, no.
SPEAKER_00:We didn't say it like that. Okay. So that maybe we took that for granted. So yes, her two parents are both immigrants from Taiwan, immigrated here in when they were in middle school, built a life, um, watched the Sephora little interview on her. It's really great how she talks about her parents working so hard to provide for her and her sister to give this life. They're also like very surprised that basketball is like going so far for her. Yeah. Like just that's that basketball is a thing that she's um well, yes, because also what did she study at Princeton?
SPEAKER_03:I don't know. Oh, she I think she graduated with medical anthropology.
SPEAKER_00:Oh.
SPEAKER_03:Right? So she's like such a brain.
SPEAKER_00:She's got some some stuff to fall back on. Yeah. And Brain and Rod, yeah, she and beauty. Um three more words. Right. So first Taiwanese American professional women's basketball player. Um I think she averaged, what, six points in uh for UConn? Is that right? Um, and just has like an amazing loving following.
SPEAKER_03:Um I know, I mean I've said this before, but I'm gonna say it again. One of my students uh that I had last year, she told me that her dad bought season tickets also, so the founding guard member, and that she it was her first jersey. So she bought the Caitlin Chen jersey. And so she was super bummed when Caitlin got waived, and then I thought about her over the summer when she came back on, and so it was one of the first things that I said because she's one of my eighth graders again this year. And so she was like, you know, she has that jersey with pride. Um, so here's a little inside scoop.
SPEAKER_00:Ooh, I love an inside scoop. The Mandarin teacher. This is live, everybody just arrived. Um, the Mandarin teacher at my school who is Taiwanese as well. I asked her, I was like, I'm doing a podcast on Caitlin Chen. Can you give me the inside scoop? I sent her an article from the World Journal, which is the biggest Taiwanese American newspaper, and I can't read it because I don't speak simple Chinese. So she was saying she's not really into sports, but she checked on Yahoo Taiwan, and she pops up, uh Caitlyn Chen pops up in the top five search results. Oh my god. So she's pretty famous. And she said, after reading some articles, I get why. Even if her skills aren't the best, she still has tons of fans. The main reason is her Taiwanese background. Taiwan is a small island that faces some serious pressure from China. Politically, we've always been at a disadvantage. So Yeah. And she like uh shout out to Natalie. Her full name is Natalie Chang. She is an educator and she isn't even into sports, but she did that little bit of research for us, and she said many Taiwanese people like me might not be big sports fans, but we definitely buy her merchandise to show our support. Oh my god, see? Yeah, it's so great. And yeah, in in the interview for one of the beauty products, she was saying that like how much representation matters for kids and that she's just so happy to be in that position.
SPEAKER_03:Totally. It's the same. Jeremy Lin. Oh, okay. Was also Taiwanese and so and also huge following. And it's the same thing, it representation. Yeah. I mean, when folks see someone that looks like them, when young kids see that, you know, it just it's it's inspiring and and is such a a path towards knowing that you two can do it. Okay, so we talked about Princeton. We talked about Yukon. Also, I mean, let's just mention Yukon's coach one more time, Gino Oriema, because he had noticed her previously. Like he saw her play when she was at Princeton, and then basically he went after her. Well, also I saw Yukon as the team to beat in this year's college ball. Cannot wait. Just a plug right now, but uh the WNBA season is coming to an end just as college ball is gonna be starting. So we'll talk about that a little bit later. Okay. Okay, back to Chen. So Valkyrez. It has been a bit of a roller coaster in terms of her being on and off, but overall, what I love about her when I think about her is jumping, jumping for joy. And let's not forget, she was jumping so much for joy. I believe it was when they clinched the playoffs, that she also like smacked Kate Martin in the head with her arm in like some wild jumping for joy jester that was caught on camera. And I'm like, of course, of course that happened.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Like she is on the bench cheering fiercely, so loudly for her teammates. And when she plays, she also has a little bit of that um magic that Carla has, which is there's a bit of an unpredictability. And you you then see some plays that she pulls off, and you're just like, oh my goddess, she just did that, and it's impressive. So I'm just like, let's get more consistent, but keeping it.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, that yeah, the young spirit of like the unpredictable kind of looks frazzled sometimes, but then you know, you make up for it by like Carla Lake jumping into the stand.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, other thing to note, she is going overseas to the Czech Republic. That was just her. She's already there.
SPEAKER_00:She just had her first two points.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, love. Yes. And here's something to say about that. Natalina Kase's style revolves around strong team energy. Okay, and that is similar to European sense of play. So we feel like um there's a good chance that you know Chen is gonna do well because she's coming from that kind of mentality. Right.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, they've curated a lovely team.
SPEAKER_03:She's she brings a lot to the team that is not seen in the stats.
SPEAKER_00:That's a good way of putting it.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, so I think if I were to sum up Caitlin in one word, it's hard to not choose joy. It made me feel personally very joyful to research her.
SPEAKER_02:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:And to know that we were also going to talk about her at the end and to know that there are so many people who are backing her.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. And she's proud of that. She's not like weighed down by having that responsibility. She said, like in high school, she went into a tournament with AAU and she looked around, she's like, Well, there aren't many of us here. Aren't many Asian Americans in this tournament. Yeah. And she kind of was like, Oh, I I'm special. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Um and she she recognizes that. That's awesome. Yeah. So what is our song? So our song for Caitlin. You say it. It's one of our Beyonce songs. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00:Where that she does with Smiley Cyrus. There you go. Okay. All right, here's my song. Okay. I'm crying. Oh, you're you're actually teary-eyed. So sad that the season's over. But she was like, I th I agree with your take that she was a key component of the joy that's a good one. It was awesome that they brought her back. Yeah. It was unexpected. That was a great decision.
SPEAKER_03:It was.
SPEAKER_00:And like and just a dream teammate. So I really, really beg it Val Valkyrie administration, if you're out there, please keep Kaylin Chen on our team. Same. I love her. Sam.
SPEAKER_03:Sam. Valkyrie, say less.
SPEAKER_00:Say less.
SPEAKER_03:Say more. Okay. All right. So we have a bunch of things that we need to address. To close out here. To close out. Such as Where are our Valks playing? Right. The overseason, the off-season.
SPEAKER_00:What yeah, what are we what are we doing with ourselves? Oh my gosh. This is the end of season one, Valkyries Say Less. And we're in the off-season. Yeah. But I want to commit to researching and keeping an eye on our Valkyries. And what has happened for me, talk about cerebral dance, is that I feel like the blinders came off from just focusing so hard on the WNBA. And now I'm seeing that there is this gigantic world of women's basketball that I have not tracked down. International world. International, yeah, world of women's basketball all over the globe that I just have not really taken the time to find to watch. And so what we're gonna do is we have found we have found with the help of other nerdy basketball people ways to keep an eye on our players. This morning, in fact, I spotted LA Latitia on YouTube playing for her team. Um I almost didn't recognize her because she has a shorter ponytail and she had a towel over her back. They won. Um but I totally recommend playing for her Spanish team? Yeah. Okay, and so she was there. I spotted her, and I was just like, it was so fun. Yeah. It was kind of like going through a portal of like, oh my gosh, I know where you are, I care about you. Like how that feel of like the pandemic when we were all separated and you were like on your sabbatical, and then we'd like see little glimpses of each other and know that everybody's aware of it. We're gonna stay connected. Stay connected.
SPEAKER_03:Once a Valk is always a Valks. Once a Valk's season one, always a Valks.
SPEAKER_00:Valks.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, well, what we should do also in the show notes is we should post the awesome spreadsheet that you found. Who are those women?
SPEAKER_00:Oh, this is awesome. So part of our nerdiness, and I wish we would have found them sooner, is that one, if you are tired of Instagram hostility, negative Nancy's, I have to recommend the WMBA threads. It is just it's mostly just chill people that are completely nerding out on basketball. Oh, yeah, yeah. I once straight into the Warriors Instagram and left like one little comment, like, Warriors, are you gonna come support your sister? Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was just so weird and like, oh, Yominsky's gonna be there because he has nothing better to do. And I was like, ugh. No, no, there's a lot of things. I'm leaving the room. I can't be on this. So I totally recommend WMBA threads. Okay. Um it's a nice little quiet corner of the world. Had actually not quiet, it had over a million views. That that section. That section of in the past week had over a million views. Um and so WMBA threads, you can choose that topic and just stay in that little niche environment. And you found two. So I found two people that were bigger nerds than us, I would say.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, well, clearly based on the spreadsheet.
SPEAKER_00:Um the spreadsheet is awesome. We'll also post that. Um so it's the person that made the spreadsheet and who is currently working on a um fandom website to follow. It's called um WBB Atlas Fandom. It's a wiki and it's just going to tell you where everyone is and what they're up to. But her first project was this spreadsheet. Um, and her name is Amanda Wegner. And Amanda is connected to this other person, um, Brianna Mitchell. They don't even know each other in real life, but they're collaborating on this over thread. They're not in a bunk bed? They're not in a bunk bed.
unknown:That's weird.
SPEAKER_00:They're just maybe they need to get into it. Researching their booties off. And actually, it was through um Brianna. Uh Brianna's handle is BreezyM91. If you're into threads, you probably recognize her. She led me to answers about where to watch these European games and where people were going to be. She started keeping track of like where the players are going in the offseason. Um I think they're both in Texas.
SPEAKER_03:I wonder if Eric Apricot is using their information or other information. Because he sent out his substack Valkyrie Nation and also talked about and gave spreadsheets of where people are going and links of where to watch.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. And so uh let's just everything from like the volunteer they're doing to the books they've written to their their apparel. Like there's they're really let's go over and just say our players, where they're going. Okay, so we got this from Amanda and Brianna.
SPEAKER_03:And I also had done a bunch of research instead of just look at their spreadsheet. So we're double nerding up.
SPEAKER_00:I wish I would just look at their spreadsheet. Okay, Carla Leite. Carla Late's uh playing for Zaragoza. Yes, in Spain. In Spain.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, let's just go in order of their jerseys. Carla Leite is number zero.
SPEAKER_00:Number two, Caitlin Chen. We just said that. She's playing for Usk USK Praha. I don't know how to say I never watched these on TV, so I don't know how to say them until we hear the announcers. And then we saw LA this morning, kicking by, it was like 80 to 50 or something. Um she's playing for Uni Hirona. And she's number three. And she's with Juste Joyce Joyste? Mm-hmm. I don't know how to say her name either, but she was on our roster. Yeah, for next year. Um, drafted, and I think she'll be here next year if she put out a video. Number five. Okay, number five, Kayla Thornton. She um is still recovering, but we believe she's getting a time off bonus. That was from Erica Apricot. I got that.
SPEAKER_03:He was um at the a$50,000 bonus and it was split between her and Veronica Burton.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, and that makes sense. Uh Kayla Thornton was our all-star. Yeah. So you want to reward her with that bonus, and then um Burton also got a bonus. I was under the under I was under the misconception that if you got a time off bonus that it meant you couldn't play for other teams um in the offseason, but it's actually it's not tied to that. Okay. Um I think oh it is in a way. I take that. It's not 90 days. It's a limit of 90 days. So if you take the time off bonus, you can only play 90 days, so Burton can play an unrivaled because it's less than 90 days. Okay, number six. Number six Kyla Charles. Kyla Charles. Venezia. So is anybody over there with Kyla Charles in Venecia? No, I don't think so. Number 12, Ileana Rupaire. Oh, she's on the powerhouse of Fenerbache for Turkey. Turkey. Turkey pays well. They also have 13 teams, like the W. And she's playing with Monique. Monique Billings, yes. Okay. That was I saw a game of theirs just like spun through the highlights. But yeah, it must be an adjustment because it feels like you're watching almost like a a college game, a division three college game, where they have some announcers, but the camera it's like one camera that's moving around, and then it comes on to the court, and then there's like maybe, maybe 200 fans. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03:And it's probably super different depending on countries.
SPEAKER_00:Also, like watching a Mihir's coach who isn't a native English speaker, but he's speaking English to coach this. To all of them. To all of them because that's their new language is really interesting. And then who's next? Janelle. Janel 13. And she's on Praha as well. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, we mentioned that. So that's cool because she's been, I think she's has she played for Praha before? I don't know. Okay. Well, I was like wondering if she's been there longer than Caitlin has, I think. She went over earlier. Or no. Anyways, I was like, maybe she is able to induct Caitlyn.
SPEAKER_00:Yes.
SPEAKER_03:Uh mentor her.
SPEAKER_00:Showed up a little later. Number 14. Okay, this one's cool. Tammy Fag Ben Lei. Oh, this is TBD though. But I've seen, um, according to the spreadsheet, Amanda's spreadsheet, that she's going to be going to China for her exit interview. Yeah, I didn't watch her exit interview. Okay. Um, she hasn't signed anywhere yet. And then also, rumor has it, we did mention this in our podcast. Right, that she was gonna be in her Harvard buddies Children of Blood and Bone. Oh my god. January 2027. Okay, that's great.
SPEAKER_03:That's cool. So that's it. Okay, number 15, Tiffany Hayes. Tiffany Hayes is back. Back on the court in Mercen Turkey. Yeah. This is live, everyone. This is live. This is where I saw her and I was like, ooh, look at how many bags she has. Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_00:Update the spreadsheet.
SPEAKER_03:Uh yeah. Oh, look at us.
SPEAKER_00:Are we on top of things? We're on the insta. Number 20, Kate Martin. Uh, she's doing Unrivaled again. Yes. This will be her second season.
SPEAKER_03:Oh, I cannot wait. I'm telling you, we already said this, but I am, I want to go. I want to go on a business trip to Florida, to Miami.
SPEAKER_00:Unrivaled lit up Philadelphia. Yes. I was so proud of my home state that we have all these players that are going to be bringing their basketball joy to Philly. Um, Philly just showed up and welcomed them. Natasha Cloud, who's from Philly, was just like, I did it. I'm gonna be a good teacher and model how to get here from New York City. And she took the train and then spoke in front of the crowd, and it was just great. Well, what am I just thinking it's a great, great movie?
SPEAKER_03:One of my New York besties, who's season ticket holder for The Liberties, texted me immediately that she bought tickets to the game in Philly. I'm a heavy and it looks good. For Unrivaled, um, I must have read this incorrectly because I swear I read that they had a stadium to watch them that had 800 people, which seems insanely small.
SPEAKER_00:Last year?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:No, I think you read that right. I think they they they need to look at other places to film.
SPEAKER_03:Because if I'm coming in from SF, I want to make sure I'm one of those 800.
unknown:Right.
SPEAKER_00:I'm like, I'm nervous. I was like, am I gonna get tickets? Well, they haven't announced the schedule, they haven't even announced the rosters.
SPEAKER_03:They've just got to be able to do that. No, I want to go over President's Day weekend.
SPEAKER_00:Okay.
SPEAKER_03:Okay, all right. Anyway, that weekend? President's Day. Well, I the girls have the entire week off, so cool. I need to take a couple days.
SPEAKER_00:The Philly game was really hot. They were doing dynamic pricing though. Where they like within an hour, like they started off at$27 and then within an hour it was like up to$40. Oh. Like, as if it were like plane fare or something. That also was like so affordable. Supply and demand. God, maybe we're hungry. Visit my mom and like go.
SPEAKER_03:Yes, that one's January 30th.
SPEAKER_00:Miami.
SPEAKER_03:All right, next player. 22, Veronica Burton.
SPEAKER_00:Also Unrivaled. Whoop! Can't wait to see what team. What if her and Money Martin are together on the show? I know. I wonder how they're gonna do that. That is crazy. Will they play against each other? Maybe. That'll be fun. Uh 24. 24 Zandalusini. Uh, she's uh with Shio. Yep. Again, right? That's our second or third year. Yep, going back. Well, she's played for Turkey too. Yep. She's with Shio. Yep. And then Monique Bellings, we already said, is with Fenabacci.
SPEAKER_03:Yep. So more on Athletes Unlimited too, because we briefly said it during our game. Um, but Athletes Unlimited, so it's in Nashville. Yes. And it begins February 2026. Our only person is Caitlin Chen thus far who's playing. This is a very interesting.
SPEAKER_00:Only 40 players that get to play, and it's five on five. So it's a different model.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, and it's a cool model because it's kind of like when you do a um fantasy. A game show. Fantasy football. Because people get points.
SPEAKER_00:And they the prize, they have prizes up to$500,000.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, so I think you end up switching. You're not on like a team. You follow a player.
SPEAKER_00:With$500,000 in prize bonuses at stake. And the rules are set by the players themselves. Come on, this sounds really cool. Athletes Unlimited. I need more more out there about who's playing and whatever. And where. And are you traveling? Or is it just in Nashville? They haven't announced their schedule yet of where we can watch them. But they say they will have that up soon. We can watch Unrivaled. They have contracts with TNT as they did last year, but it's also going to be on True TV and HBO Max. And then thank you for the research. We have your EuroLeague is on YouTube. We can post these in the description of this episode. So people don't have to do all the legwork that you and Amanda and Rihanna have already done.
SPEAKER_03:And Eric Apricot.
SPEAKER_00:And Eric Apercott. And my experience this morning, it's calming to watch basketball that's sort of lo-fi. Because it's not all like something that bothered me about the Valkyries was like the green screen at halftime. I was like, this isn't necessary. Where they all were like different sizes. Yeah. And they had like a fake bahalla behind them. And so when you're watching the European Leagues, it's kind of back to like the 90s. It's just basketball.
SPEAKER_03:I love that also. I feel like I have one foot in the 90s at all the time. Yeah. It's like, don't ask me any pop culture reference after 97.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. You can hardly make out the players, but you can see the plays really well because it's like someone's up in the bleachers. Oh my god. Love. Okay.
SPEAKER_03:I feel like I have one last thing to say, and then I think we need to do a little recap of the experience of doing this in the season. All right, last thing is just about we've heard about agency, like restricted, unrestricted. And I think we should just like address this more once in another off-season podcast, but it's just to say that like with the CBA and with the um contracts, there's gonna be a lot of free agents. So I've read something crazy, like 80% of the league or something is gonna be like free agents.
SPEAKER_00:I saw a funny thing. Like, if your agent didn't create a contract for you that ended October 2025, you have a problematic agent. Because so many people did this well. And so so many contracts. These this means that like the word agency, free agency, it's such a beautiful concept. Of like, as women, they have the freedom and the agency to demand better pay, negotiate their contracts, go to a different team, go to a different city to live in and be happy. And so it's kind of like cowboy wild west. Perfect. It's gonna be interesting.
SPEAKER_03:There are words that you might hear saying, like restricted or unrestricted. And so those are terms regarding whether you can negotiate with your current team or not. And I know that the only player, only two players on the Valks are Carla Late and Kate Martin, who are under contract for next year, where I believe they did want to leave. It's like the Valks have to match it or something. Interesting. Anyways, we'll have to be a lot of shaking up.
SPEAKER_00:Okay. So I I feel like we can trust that certain players are gonna be back.
SPEAKER_03:Ugh. And I really have all of them, and I hope that we're gonna get more because we're gonna go from twelve to fifteen.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. I love that Tiffany Hayes loves our beaches. I hope that she got a wetsuit and that she's like, oh, I bought a$200 wetsuit and now I have to stay. Yes, you do. And hang out on the beach with my dogs. Yes, you do. My dogs. Carla Leigh, I think, is happy here.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Um yeah.
SPEAKER_03:Also, I had uh I had a profile piece that was released in the French press this morning. Congrats. Merci SF, and that was awesome because we did an interview and talked about how we need to be on top of things for the start of the next season to support our French speakers and get like the consulate and the news and different French organizations involved to like host like welcoming sessions to, you know, make sure that they know that they are also welcomed by the folks in the community.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, and do interviews in their first language so we can learn more. And then remain them with subtitles, please. Yes. We want to hear every side of these players. Oh, we need Press Fest. Yeah, we need Press Fest.
SPEAKER_03:That's the goal for season two. Okay, let's do a recap, brief recap, what this experience was like for us because it's been incredible. IncreĂble. I keep saying that.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. Go ahead, talk.
SPEAKER_03:Okay. I love that when we started this, we started it out of pure excitement and joy from experiencing the energy of the preseason game. And that we launched into a project without knowing where it was going.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:And that after starting it, we realized that we had something kind of special in terms of our synergy, and we were like, let's just do it. And then decided to spend hours and hours and hours countless hours in different cities, countries, and how it has only been a massive source of joy to do that. And spend more time with you and to get into the WNBA, which, you know, hadn't been my world beforehand. And so to reconnect with basketball, it feels very nostalgic and reconnecting with a part of myself that was a huge part of my identity. And it's like a few years ago when I joined a women's soccer team and all of a sudden was playing team sports and realized that for 20 years I hadn't done that. But again, it was like such a big part of my identity. And I'm like, oh, it's like I'm back. And to do it in San Francisco, which is you know where I grew up, it's like a reminder of all the things that I love about this city too, in terms of the diversity and the creativity and the possibility. And we just did this together, and it's wild to think the amount of interviews and TV and press pieces that you know have been done. And I'm like, it's very grounding because it's been exciting, but it's like we're doing this to uplift these players and to uplift uh the importance of paying them more. We're doing something important and it's not about us.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. I I like to say it's the funnest volunteer work I've ever done. Um it's just very very soul lifting. I read something about how raves and dancing and screaming together like produce this synergy with people. And I I was just like, oh, that's like what Bot Hollow was. Totally. I just felt like it in this moment when everything is so hard and so much of our freedom is under attack. Totally to have a place where we felt totally free and that our kids could see that freedom and enjoy it, welcome, new role models in their life. Yeah. Um, and people just yeah, setting aside all the stress for a couple hours every once in a while. It was just really healthy. It felt very, very healthy.
SPEAKER_03:I can't wait for season two. Also, I love that season two coincides with like the end of our school year. Just so that we know like the end of our school year, and then we go into summer, but like that we have another job. But it sounds like it's great. Yeah. Also, personally, 2025 started in one of the hardest cra times of my life. Like January 13th is when my back issues started. And for three months, I was laid up and so just like miserable, and really went to dark places, darker than I've ever in my life been. And to think that that was the beginning of 25. And then we got into this, which has been like one of literally the best experiences, electrifying of my entire life. And I'm like, it I've I'm going to do a TED talk. I'm I'm gonna do my own TED talk on the power of you know, not giving up and keep plugging along and just doing. You must do, but you must do and connect because it feels good. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:And it helps others. Transformative. I listened to one of our first episodes, and I was like, oof, I sound like a a shy, softer person. I was very like, does anyone give a crap about what I think about basketball? And it's just been so validating of the things I love to see and watch and think about, and then to just be able to like hear other people enjoy thinking about it too. And even the Amanda and Brianna on threads, like connecting. It's just like this little web of people that just need a little something positive to think about in between the work and when we were at Ricky.
SPEAKER_03:And we met Chris Rockwell and you know, learned about what she's gone through also physically this year and how she came out of it, and how she had a beautiful moment with Monique Billings, and then that was captured by Kelsey on KPIX. Um but just being able to meet with her and uh connect, I feel like this has been about connections and joy.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. And healing. And healing. Like we both miss our dad so much, and it we've just kind of revisited the the values that we grew up with and the joy of like our high school years, and then to kind of think of like how that good code of ethics is passed on to our kids when I'm just constantly giving speeches to my middle school students about these things. Yeah, I'm in charge of the women's sports club now at my school. I know. That is so awesome.
SPEAKER_03:A little door is opened um in my life to be like, I'm not just a ceramics artist or you are such a I mean, we don't also talk about this, but like Raina is an amazing ceramics artist. I am just we will have to put out there in our stories when we do some holiday pop-ups because run, don't walk, or call her for a commission. And obviously she didn't pay me to say this.
SPEAKER_00:But I will some Valkyries merch, like the meeting of my two joys. Oh, great. It was like Bad Bunny with Huntryx on Sunday Night Live. I was like, ceramics and Valkyries.
SPEAKER_03:It's happening, just blending all the worlds. Um, okay, so before we launch into our final song, we just want to thank the listeners because you reaching out to us in all the ways that you do, whether it's on the Facebook group, whether it's on Instagram, whether it is DMing us directly, calling us, contacting us, yelling our names in the street, shouting out my typos on threads.
SPEAKER_00:Thank you.
SPEAKER_03:Any way that you reach out to us and also let us know that you find joy in what we're doing fuels our fire.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah.
SPEAKER_03:So thank you very, very much. We will be back. And with that, what is our sound?
SPEAKER_00:So this is a thank you. I feel like it's to Caitlin Chen, it's to you, it's to Bahala. It's the Golden Girls.
SPEAKER_03:Also, thank you for being a friend. Yes. It's only the best song that we could end season one with. One of my favorite songs.
SPEAKER_02:Thank you for being a friend.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, and my phone shut down.
SPEAKER_03:And if you threw a part in. All right, everyone, that's it for the regular season of season one. We'll see you in the postseason with a few episodes before we come back for season two.
SPEAKER_00:Bonus episodes.
SPEAKER_03:All right, so this is Vanessa.
SPEAKER_00:And this is Raina.
SPEAKER_03:And this is Valkyrie's Say Less.
SPEAKER_02:Valkyrie.
